Suleymaniye Mosque
The mosque was built by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan, Alaeddin Keykubad I, during the reorganization of the city in 1231, at the summit of the castle, just outside the İçkale. However, the mosque was destroyed in the following years and was rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century during the Ottoman period.
The mosque with a single minaret is known as Alaaddin, Kale or Süleymaniye. The building is made of rubble stone and has a square plan. It has a tiled dome on an octagonal drum. 15 small cubes are placed in the dome, which acts as a hanger, to provide acoustics. This feature emerges during worship. The narthex is covered with three tiled domes on four legs. Door and window covers are a good example of wood carving workmanship of the Ottoman period.
